Jewish Heritage Tourism in Krakow. Authenticity and Commodification Issues

Tourism destinations located within rich and complex cultural contexts tend to offer a wide range of different experiences visitors, spanning from standardized more alternative ones. The quest for authenticity is central in the construction tourism image business, but easily raises questions related appropriation, commercialization trivialization. This study focuses on Jewish heritage tourism, niche segment gradually turning into mass experience, through qualitative research made Krakow, Poland. Jewish-themed area has gone intense growth spite its dwindling population. As consequence, representation consumption mostly occurs independently community itself shows clear signs commercial exploitation. results show that, issues simplified narratives staged practices, commodification, with partial functional reconstruction past, does not interfere religious or secular activities community, which pragmatically focused present-day life.
